Also known as “Thessalonica,” Thessaloniki is the second-largest city in Greece. It is also the capital of the region of Central Macedonia. It is also known as “the “co-capital,” an honorific that references the city’s status as the second capital of the Eastern Roman Empire after Constantinople (now Istanbul). Today it is the fifth largest city in the Balkans.The city is a hugely important transportation hub for southeastern Europe, and it is the second most important business, commercial and political center in Greece after Athens. Nonetheless, the city is best known internationally as the home of a buzzing cultural and social life – Greece’s cultural capital. The Thessaloniki International Film Festival and the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair is held annually in the city.
