Also this: My Thursday TV mini Review which you all have clearly been dying to read: Just when one thinks that the great scripted TV revival (which was kicked off by The Sopranos and Six Feet Under and is now 15 years old ) is about to finally die off and be subsumed once and for all by The Honey BooBoo Kardashian Housewives of Marin County Lock Up - it gets another ass kicking entry. Ive watched the first 2 episodes of Transparent and it is stunningly good. Jeffrey Tambor is astonishing. An actor in absolute command of his skills. And its my favorite version of L.A. since Six Feet Under - this city is usually portrayed as hyper violent or just relentlessly stupid. The Fishers of Fisher and Sons were essentially upper middle class Pasadena WASPs, .a very real texture of L.A. no one captured on TV before Alan Ball. - The Pfeffermans on Transparent are Westside Jews, rendered here with the precise balance of SoCal affectation and only 2 generations back Yiddish shtetl people anxiety. My God, I love these people. I dont know that I ever want to be in a city without them... (My mildly politically incorrect theory about cities is this: In the West you can create a good city with about any group of reasonably intelligent civic minded types and a few rebels, but you cannot create a GREAT one without a certain critical mass of gay men and/or Ashkanazi Jews, both is better.) So far Transparent feels like a loving reiteration of 6 Feet Under in many ways....add 10 years of remarkably swift social evolution. Boiled right down, its a show about paying closer attention. And so far, it is beautiful. Thank you for your kind attention to this important matter. https://youtube/watch?v=y-3Q2W0I2Xc
