Alstom, a French power company with ties in the United States, has agreed to pay US$772 million ($998 million) to resolve allegations that it bribed high-ranking foreign government officials for lucrative projects, says the US Justice Department. Federal prosecutors said Alstom falsified its records and paid tens of millions of dollars in bribes for help in obtaining projects worth more than US$4 billion in countries including Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Alstoms corruption scheme was sustained over more than a decade and across several continents, said Deputy Attorney James Cole. It was astonishing in its breadth, its brazenness, and its worldwide consequences.
