Although 12 Years a Slave is a very hard film to watch, it serves as a vivid reminder of the horrors of American slavery. Having watched it, although I’d hesitate to recommend it in general, I do wish today’s Confederate sympathizers would sit through it and imagine themselves bound to the whipping post, viciously beaten by their owners for the crime of being born with the wrong color of skin, in the wrong place, in the wrong time. More importantly, I hope genuine lovers of liberty expand their efforts to educate people about the nature and foundation of individual rights, or, as the Founders put it (regardless of their consistency in adherence to this principle), the fundamental truth that, in their rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, all men are created equal. —Ari Armstrong
