Although I despise mainstream media and everything it stands for, I acknowledge the importance of this article as, in the very least, it is a step in the right direction for Canadian society in the process of unlearning the myths of the master narrative taught to us in our schools, by our government, and continually reinforced through media distortions of First Nations issues and rights. The residential school system aimed to eradicate an entire peoples through the erasure of culture, language, and family/community ties, a legacy which is far from over. This judge is absolutely correct in naming the residential school system an act of genocide. Canadian settler society must relearn its history, the truths about its colonial past, only then can we begin to understand the structure of contemporary settler/Indigenous relations. In this moment, police are employing violent tactics--unwarranted arrests, tear gas, rubber bullets, police dogs, media repression-- against the protectors of the land and water in Elsipogtog First Nation- women, elders, warriors, grassroots journalists, are framed as the enemies, and SWN, an American corporation, is framed as the victim. The Canadian governments colonial agenda did not stop with the closure of the last residential school...it is alive and well...and we do not have to look far to see it in action. ctvnews.ca/judge-calls-residential-schools-a-form-of-genocide-1.770450
