Although, I used to have second to the last symptom below, but that doesnt mean am dyslexic o, ehen! Read this article and benefit from it. DYSLEXIA Posted on March 27, 2014 by Halima Adebola Fowosire Many a times, some kids have been screamed at, punished, intimidated laughed at; by colleagues, teachers, and even parents; due to their inability to read or write like their age mates. Some see it as unseriousness, others as non chalant attitude in the part of the child; while a few see the child as utterly hopeless. What majority of people do not realise is that, these children suffer from a medical disorder, and they need all the help, encouragement, and love, from people that surround them. Dyslexia, also known as Developmental reading disorder, is characterized by difficulty with learning to read fluently, and with accurate comprehension, despite normal intelligence. Dyslexia can be related to heredity, brain injury, or hormonal influences. It is the most common learning disability in children and persists throughout life. It is caused by an impairment in the brain’s ability to translate images gotten from the eyes into understandable language. Signs and symptoms of dyslexia include: - unusually early or late developmental stages (talking, crawling, etc) - stutters under stress - illegible handwriting - too quiet - poor in sports - intelligent but do not do well in written tests - has low self esteem - talented in arts, music, engineering, designing, building – reads with little understanding - is seen as lazy, careless, with behavioural problem - often confuses right/ left, over/ under - can be class clown, trouble maker - can be extra deep or light sleeper. Dyslexic children are at risk of developing emotional problems, due to frustration. However, they do have hope, and can learn eventually, if well taught and properly monitored. Early intervention can give them the encouragement and tools needed to manage in school and compensate for their disability. Parents should talk to a paedritician to rule out any physical disability like visual problems; then, a learning specialist, educational psychologist, or speech therapist should be sought for additional assistance. Dyslexic children can still learn in a regular classroom but will need help to do so, like additional time for tests, etc. Parents should educate themselves more on dyslexia, help the dyslexic child, read to him, help with home works, and encourage the children in activities they love. Please get help if the child shows signs of emotional distress.
