Although admitted as a dry state, North Dakota unfortunately had a history of having the most hard-drinking utility workers in the early 20th Century. One reason ND telephone service was so spotty in its early days was the habit of linemen -- preparing to pass out on the floor -- looking up at a seven-foot-above-ground pole and thinking it gigantic, then ordering them by the train car load. This costly problem led the telephone company to convince farmers and ranchers that the low poles could double as fencing. The project did not work well. Here Brandon Delvos great great grandfather stands next to one of the low pole/fences; the next day, his prize bull tore through the whole shebang and shut down telephone service in Williams and Divide counties for a week...
