Although all trash in Connecticut is burned to generate power, MUCH more energy is saved overall by recycling because acquiring the raw natural resource to make things is so energy intensive. Whether its harvesting trees and running paper mills or drilling for oil and processing into plastics or mining minerals and refining and smelting metals, or digging up sand for glass, all of these use a lot more energy than reprocessing recycled material into new products. Energy savings alone makes recycling the most effective way we have to manage our resources better, but it also keeps climate changing greenhouse gases out of the air, extends available landfill space, lowers toxin releases into air and water, helps to balance the trade debt by lowering the amount of natural resources that have to be imported, and even saves lives because mining is a whole lot more dangerous than running a recycling center.
