Although almost complete at the time of the Chernobyl accident, the building of the ChNPPs reactor 5 was never actually in operation. In fact, completion of the construction and the subsequent startup were scheduled for autumn of 1986. The explosion of reactor 4 put an end to these plans, even though works were not officially abandoned until early 1988. The ruins of the building have turned into an inscrutable maze of corridors, halls, holes and staircases. I spent half a day inside twice, and am sure I have not nearly seen all of it. Much less would I be able to identify the purpose of each part I HAVE seen. Legend has it that the soviets planned the ChNPP to be expanded to a grand total of at least eight running reactors - twelve even, according to some (less reliable) sources. Considering a second, much more powerful explosion that would have eradicated the whole power plant was only averted at the very last moment, just imagine the potential damage, had all this occurred in the fully developed nuclear power plant the soviet leadership envisioned....
