Although cheap, we should not waste our water Malaysia is endowed with hundreds of rivers, crisscrossing throughout the country. In Johor itself, we have about 250 rivers. But sadly, rivers and drains have conveniently become dustbins for households and industries. More and more rivers becoming polluted and we are getting lesser good quality water suitable as a source of drinking and human consumption. The recent drought has aggravated the shortage of water and a grim reminder that despite being endowed with many rivers, we still face shortage of water. This problem will definitely affect the densely populated area. The shortage of water in Klang Valley is a lesson that we should value water and love our river. The Chinese always says: 饮水思源 (Appreciate your water and remember its source). Unfortunately, wastage of water has becoming a common phenomenon in this country. We use the same water for drinking, washing and watering our plants. The campaigns to love the river and not waste water have now proven to be ineffective. Our treated water is relatively inexpensive. Hence, Malaysia consumes more water than the recommended usage. WHO recommends between 50-‐100 litre per user per day. It is often said that when campaigns do not work, punitive action should be consider. This will help the rakyat to value and appreciate the water more. Therefore, water tariff would be raised. While I understand why Penang Government wants to review its water tariff, but the Penang Chief Minister obviously is unable to keep his words as he promised the Penangites that Penang Government will not increased quit rent, water tariff, assessment nor business licence for this year and next year in his 2014 new year message. I would like to propose for houses and residential apartment to install affordable storm water collection to gather water during rain. The rain water can then be utilized for washing car, gardening and miscellaneous usage that do not require same quality of the water as drinking water.
