Although getting up at 5.30 yesterday was not my favourite part of the day, it was worth it for the time spent at the first WEM Conference in Nottingham. Matt Haig s opening keynote speech was so moving, so rawly honest about the way that writing had helped him find his way out of a hugely problematic time: I wasnt the only one with tears in my eyes when he finished. My 6 one-to-one meetings with writers were very interesting indeed: one was extremely argumentative, one cried because she found my comments so helpful, two could be potential clients - an amazing tally. The late afternoon panel with agent-friends Sheila Crowley and John Jarrold, splendidly chaired by the magnificent Henderson Mullin, CEO of Writing East Midlands, drew a large, engaged, crowd and some terrific questions. Nice to see Ross Bradshaw selling books there (including mine!) with a stand for his newly-opened Five Leaves Bookshop. All this and warm sunshine, making the magnificent grounds of Nottingham University look so beautiful. Jane Streeter and her fellow members of WEM have a success on their hands Id say. Sheila and I travelled back on the same train, and talked the whole way, which made the journey fly by. Home at 9.15, one glass of wine & then I practically passed out, I was so tired. Lovely day.
