Although history has always seen groups form within the main national group (i.e., religious, trade-oriented, academic, or social), what the world is witnessing now is an unprecedented number of divergent and violent groups. Recent evidence of violent expression by divergent groups in America includes terrorism such as the Oklahoma City bombing, the New York World Trade Center bombing, the series of bombings by the Unabomber, and the detailing of the Amtrak train in Arizona. It is these groups, what I call fringe groups, which force America and the world to notice them using terrorist tactics.
