Although it seems like summer just started, Bolivar United Methodist Church and Countryside Assembly are already planning for the back-to-school season. Our churches are partnering to host a Back-to-School Extravaganza from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2014, at the Bolivar United Methodist Church. The event will be open to everyone. Our hope is to give about 300 Polk County students the school supplies they need to start school prepared and ready to learn, at no cost to the students family. Our desire is not to compete with other churches and organizations in Polk County that also provide school supplies for kids; rather, it is to give even more children the opportunity to receive school supplies and information about services available in their community. In addition to providing backpacks filled with school supplies, we plan to have the Miles for Smiles van available for tours, and students will receive a toothbrush and toothpaste from the Polk County Health Center. A free hot dog lunch, T-shirt, haircut and comb will be provided. Local organizations including Community Outreach Ministries, Boy Scouts of America, Polk County 4-H, Roy Blunt YMCA of Bolivar, Girl Scouts of the USA, Parents as Teachers, Care to Learn and more will be on hand to talk to parents and students about their services. The University of Missouri Extension will show students how to prepare a healthy after-school snack, and the Bolivar Police Department will provide free fingerprinting for children. Countryside Assembly will provide inflatables for kids to have fun after picking up their school supplies.
