Although not strictly in the Clyde valley, Stockbriggs House did - TopicsExpress

Although not strictly in the Clyde valley, Stockbriggs House did lie on banks of the Nethan, one of the Clydes tributaries. This house had a powerful effect on me, mainly because it was in an area I thought I knew well, having visited it throughout my childhood, but I never once saw it, hidden in the trees across the field. It lay just north of Coalburn, after a right-angled bend in the road where there is a little footbridge over the river. I used to go to that part of the river as a child many times with mum and dad as it was safe to play in the water. One day in my early twenties I was driving past on a “spooky tour” looking for ancient, interesting places, and there it was staring out from behind the trees as if it had just appeared. Beautiful stonework, almost as impressive as Cambusnethan Priory, with a fantastic stone Fleur de Lys on one of the towers. I took friends and family to see, everyone thought it was amazing. Then one day, a few months later, it was gone. Completely demolished, as if it had never been there. I searched for information about it but there seemed to be no pictures of it or information about it on the internet, so I uploaded these photos to the Canmore site so that its existence is at least recorded somewhere. I had put these photos on another FB page before and a couple of people contacted me about ghostly goings on there! Lights in the sky and it appearing to be inhabited when viewed from across the river. I always felt there was a presence there! Not scary, just sad. We once met an old man on the path beside it who was walking his dog and he mentioned that the Canadian Army had been there during the war. He also mentioned a fire. Id love to know more about this place.
