Although regularly used by technical divers to discover and explore shipwrecks, the use of rebreathers by maritime archaeologists worldwide is still in its infancy. The Wisconsin Historical Society is one group of pioneering maritime archaeologists that have incorporated CCRs and technical diving volunteers to investigate shipwrecks within their jurisdiction in the Great Lakes. These deep shipwrecks are typically more intact and have more artefacts than shallower, more accessible wrecks, offering amazing opportunities for collaborative maritime archaeological research. In his OZTeK2015 presentation, ‘Exploring Deepwater Shipwrecks in the Great Lakes’, former OWUSS Scholar, Matt Carter, discusses some of the projects that he worked on while at the Wisconsin Historical Society and talks about opportunities for technical divers to become involved with maritime archaeology in Australia and New Zealand.
