Although the energies that make the big shift at this time of year from the dying cycle to the growing cycle happen out of view, our only visible reference is the rising and setting of the sun. That this is not an immediate transition is clear from the tables of rising and settings that show that although the setting begins to happen a few minutes later right on December 21, the decrease of the suns rising at 40 degrees north latitude (New York) continues until the 31st, at which point it levels off at 7:22 AM where it remains until sometime between January 5 and 15th, when it finally begins to rise 2 minutes earlier (by this date the setting has been increasing at a rate of about a minute each day). My table shows only figures for every ten days, so until I find a table that gives the rising and setting of the sun for every day, I can only guess that the actual increase begin about the 6th of January, the traditional Twelfth Night of Christmas. So those of you still in the end of year doldrums, check to see how you feel on the 7th of January.
