Although the main focus of today’s news is the hostage siege at Martin Place in Sydney, dozens of people have concerns of a different kind – facing court for criminal offences ranging from larceny (stealing), to intentional or reckless damage (previously known as ‘malicious damage’), to assault and resisting arrest. The charges have been brought as a result of ‘Operation Lightfingers’ which targeted shoplifting offences in the Sydney CBD, Bondi Junction and Broadway over a five-day period. Over 100 people were allegedly found to be offending – 34 of whom were served with ‘court attendance notices’ and will have to face court, 64 of whom were issued with infringement notices and 7 of whom were given youth cautions.
