Although theres a lot of boxing to watch today, very little feels main event worthy. Kell Brook v Vyashaslev Senchenko? Eh. When your signature win is against journeyman Carson Jones (Brook), or an over the hill Ricky Hatton (Senchenko), are you really elite level or world class? And lets not forget that Senchenko was stopped on cuts by the light punching Paulie Malignaggi. Maybe this fight ends up being competitve and entertaining because both men are, at this point of their careers, B level fighters. And remember, Brooks promoter Eddie Hearn was calling this a big step UP in class for Brook when this fight was made. Arthur Abraham vs Giovanni De Carolis? Who? What? Really? No thank you. And then we have the night cap on Showtime with Bernard Hopkins defending his IBF light heavyweight title against Karo Murat, Peter Quillin defends his WBO middleweight title against Gabe Rosado, and Deontay Wilder is being offered yet another sacrificial lamb in Nicolai Firtha. Yeah. If you spend your Saturday night out on the town, or watching Oregon-UCLA, no one can blame you. Only the name of Bernard Hopkins gives this card the legitimacy of a televised Showtime fight. His opponent however excites no one. Especially when B-Hop has so many other good fighters at light heavy he could be facing instead of Murat. Im sure Kovalev, Stevenson, Bute, and even a third fight with Pascal would have fans more excited than this bout with Murat. Peter Quillin vs. Gabe Rosado may be the only thing that saves this card from being a disaster and a waste of time, but even that is debatable. Quillin is, in some ways, similar to many of the European fighters that often get criticized here in the US. He has the WBOs version of a world championship, but his competition has been relatively light, despite the fact that he campaigns in a division full of talented fighters. Gabriel Rosado, despite having challenged Gennady Golovkin for the middleweight title and lost, has fought primarily as a junior middleweight, yet Quillins people (Golden Boy) sought him out for a title defense instead of one of the many qualified and dangerous fighters that populate the division. As for Deontay Wilder, YAWN! Fight somebody weve seen or heard of, and then well get excited. This post wasnt supposed to be this long, so a special thanks to those of you who read the whole thing.
