Although touted as the answer to low-performing academic achievement in many of Wisconsin’s—and the nation’s public schools—facts and data about private, often-for-profit charter schools, shows they don’t produce any better results, and in many cases perform more poorly, than the public schools they replace. “Yet,” according to Dave Zweifel, editor emeritus of The Capital Times, “conservative legislators (in Madison and elsewhere) and their wealthy donors continue to craft legislation to make it easier to turn public schools into private charters that are outside the jurisdiction of elected school boards, school district officials and, of course, teachers unions, even though they siphon taxpayer money from increasingly depleted traditional school coffers.” Zweifel has no doubt if politicians and the money that pays for them have their way. “(T)urning public schools over to private interests — indeed, forcing that to happen through state legislation as some legislators are poised to do — is the first step on a slippery slope to destroying public education and all it has stood for since the nations founding.”
