Although you may not have heard of him, Trevor Shearston is near to being my favorite Australian author. He writes of Papua New Guinea as only someone who has lived there can. He captures that blurry dreamlike sense of did I really just see that--really? A truly fine writer. This is from his book Something in the Blood. “But suppose you gave me a thousand dollars tomorrow, and I went back. And one of the crew—the mate say—touched me on the arm and said, there’s the island sir. What if I looked and could see nothing but rolling mist with an eagle floating against it? What then?” I changed my entire life, down to the DNA, because of a pale purple cowrie shell I found on a volcanic black sand beach one day at shadowless noon. This is someone who can understand that. asopa.typepad/asopa_people/2013/11/author-trevor-shearston-is-on-board-the-crocodile-express.html
