Altitude sickness – it has never been a problem for me in the past. When Hollis and Lloyd were around 16 and 13, they hiked to the summit of Mount Washburn with me and Margaret. Washburn is inside the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The elevation at the peak is 10,243 feet. Many times we have hiked to the top of Mount Mitchell which is the highest peak of the Appalachian Mountains. The elevation of Mount Mitchell is 6,684 feet. We arrived in Red River, New Mexico on Thursday for a music event there which we were a part of. On Friday morning we toured Red River. I noticed that I was getting weaker and weaker. That morning Hollis, Margaret and I took the ski lift to the top of the mountain. The elevation there was 10,350 feet. The City of Red River is 8,750 feet. That night we were part of a concert with Dana, Judy, David and Annette. I got weaker and weaker. Margaret had some workshop on Saturday. One was a Sacred Harp singing which I joined her on. That afternoon I joined Margaret in a pickin’ stick / mountain dulcimer workshop. By the end of the workshop I was done in and struggled back to my room which was just across from the Community Center where the workshops and concerts were held. We were also scheduled for a Saturday night concert. I just couldn’t do it so Dana took my place. All that night I was as sick as I could be. Now I was already weak went we arrived in Red River but I just didn’t think it would affect me that way. Sunday morning we packed and came down out of the mountains. I started getting better as soon as we reached a decent altitude. Now I know a little about altitude sickness.
