Alumasc External Wall Insulation improves life for Clackmannan Residents Devonway is a residential estate situated in Clackmannan, near Alloa. The properties are a mix of both private and social housing, consisting of over 140 terraced houses and bungalows. Originally built using No Fines Construction, the homes have recently received a range of energy saving measures including the installation of Alumasc’s Swisslab External Wall Insulation (EWI) System, which has improved the aesthetic appearance of the estate and will contribute to much lower energy bills for residents in the future. The scheme, which was completely free of charge to tenants and homeowners, was partly financed by Clackmannanshire Council, with additional funding from Scottish Government’s HEEPS:ABS (Home Energy Efficiency Programme Scotland: Area Based Scheme) and ECO (Energy Company Obligation). Alumasc’s Registered Installer Graham Roofing of Glasgow, installed a total of over 8,500m2 of Swisslab EWI at the properties, using 90mm Grey EPS insulation and a white, dry dash render finish. The result has been an impressive u-value reduction to 0.28w/m2K from the original 2.08w/m2K. Residents at Devonway are already reporting much warmer, comfortable living conditions, with one resident commenting: “Since the work was done, we have already noticed that our hallway is much warmer, and the temperature in the house doesn’t drop as low as it used to. Our house looks better and the insulation has already made a tremendous difference to our lives.” Councillor Les Sharp adds: “I’ve been very impressed with the works carried out at Devonway. The many families and elderly people who live on the estate have previously struggled with high heating costs, but the new insulation system will certainly make life cheaper, easier and warmer for our residents.” Graham Roofing have used Swisslab extensively on past projects and Devonway presented a largely straightforward installation, with the exception of nesting birds at some of the properties. Alumasc’s technical team worked with Graham Roofing to reconfigure the installation programme allowing the affected properties to be left until the end of the nesting season. Commenting on the project, Alan Thorpe from Graham Roofing, said: “The Devonway project is an excellent example of how a strong partnership between supplier and installer can really lead to success. We have delivered a quality programme of works using an excellent product installed by our experienced team, and completed the works with minimum disruption, ahead of time and on budget.” Swisslab is the market leading insulated render system for overcladding existing properties and is used extensively to transform homes into warmer, more attractive places to live. It is an efficient and cost effective way of improving thermal standards and allows for minimal disruption to residents during application. Alumasc’s full range of EWI systems are BBA approved, fully warranted and are available with a range of design and specification options, across many building types.
