Alumni report from Flatiron School. Im happy my former software classmates are doing so well! I was in the Ruby 003 class a year ago. __________________________ Ruby-001 Ana Asnes Becker published an interactive on the Axis of Additives on wsj! Check out her D3-driven data visualization piece on what food additives are found in which supermarket aisles. Shes also working with Crystal Chang on a startup called Catchpool, a social network for sharing the best of the internet! Finally, Ana just launched a music project called Songs for Muses. Shell release a new song each week for 9 weeks, each written for a different mythological woman, telling her story in her own words. The first song went up last week, and its for the Sirens! Ruby-002 Chris Lake is having a baby in March and likely moving to the Bay Area in May. Congrats Chris! David Manasters old life meets his new life with SourceCon Q&A. Like Stack Overflow, but for recruiters. Check it out! Ruby-003 Bana Malik is happy to announce the first Rails course at Codeacademy! She has been working late nights since June to develop the content for the course, with help from a few team members on the frontend and backend. The course is still in beta, so expect some updates and fixes in the near future! Stephanie Oh is now officially working as a Product Manager at Splash! If anyone is interested in exploring the possibility of getting into Product Management or doing a hybrid developer/PM role (like she originally did upon joining Splash), hit her up at stephanie@splashthat. Saron Yitbarek has been working on CodeNewbie for the past few months. She’s added a community discussion forum and a weekly Podcast, featuring guests like Poornima Vijayashanker (Femgineer, Mint), Marty Haught (Ruby Central), and our very own William Jeffries (Ruby-004, HeatSeek). They’re also looking for blog posts from grads who are in their first or second dev job. Email Saron at [email protected] if you’re interested in contributing! Michael Polycarpou published a blog post on Creating a Tearable Cloth in Javascript. Check it. He also built New Tab Video for Chrome while watching an episode of Homeland. It loads a beautiful video whenever you open a new tab. More videos coming soon! Jordán Treviño and Patrick Janson founded and built MainStreet, a hassle-free way to invest in institutional-grade Real Estate deals, and after just three weeks of Private Beta, users had invested over $1,200,000 through the platform! They are looking for Rails developers (freelance to start, but may evolve to a full-time role) and collaborators! Feel free to reach out. (This is a correction from the October FAN.) Ruby-004 Danny Fenjves ran the marathon! Congratulate him when you see him! Thomas Surgent has been working alongside a senior programmer at WeWork to build a Rails application that takes data from an open source API with information on NY State Legislators and their related committees, districts, and contact information and pipes it into a prebuilt Podio application. They utilized hierarchical programming, single table inheritance, and an awesome test suite. The application is currently being used and sold to over 175 users working at non-profits! Justin Belmonts company, Perkla, was acquired by ID.me a few weeks ago. He was profiled about it in this amazing GQ video. Ruby-005 Ilana Sufrin was hired as a web developer at Refinery29, a new-media brand for smart, creative and stylish women everywhere. Cool! Ben Serviss began a software engineering internship at Shapeways, a super 3D printing marketplace and community, at the beginning of November. Liz Baillie just started a new job as a developer at SimpleReach. She also won an Opportunity Scholarship to RubyConf in San Diego this month, and built a crowdfunding site to raise the funds for airfare and hotel (since the scholarship only covered the ticket). She raised the funds in less than 6 hours! Justin Kim (who is concentrating in Healthcare Management + Biology at the University of Pennsylvania) is building all kinds of healthcare apps! Over the course of two hackathons, he helped make Tremedic, which integrates with the Myo to detect tremor rates in Parkinsons patients to help doctors diagnose and monitor Parkinsons better, and an Android app called Heartbeat, which is a fitness app that plays music at the same pace that youre running. Heartbeat won first place! BK-000 Nisha Batra and Ariel Isaacs participated in the Codeathon for Womens Health, sponsored by the Clinton Foundation, Ace Hotel and Jawbone back in August. The winners were just announced, and Nisha and Ariel came in 2nd place and their photos were featured in the November issue of Self magazine! It was a great experience, and they were both very excited to have won. Sara Gorecki is writing a chapter on how to build a NodeBoat for the book Make: JavaScript Robotics: Building NodeBots with Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and BeagleBone, which should be published in the spring. She also participated in the Museum of Natural Historys first hackathon, Hack the Universe. It was the AMNHs first hackathon and it was awesome! BK-001 Erica Cheung is making the big move to Seattle to explore opportunities on the West Coast. If you live out there, get in touch!
