Alvaro just arrived in Canada and is teaching private guitar classes. Please get in touch to set something up: guitar@fionamalena ALVARO ANTONA VILLAR Born in Madrid, Spain, Álvaro Antona Villar began his study of Flamenco guitar when he was 15 years old with Ricardo Modrego. Later he launched his professional career while also further exploring Flamenco and its roots at the Complutense University of Madrid where studied Arabic Culture and Literature. He has since passionately adhered to Flamenco with its lifestyle of music, dance and soul for over 15 years. Álvaro has specialized in dance and singing accompaniment since 2001, training at the Madrid Conservatorium of Music Fundación Casa Patas. He also furthered mentored under many great guitarists such as Paco Cortés, Pedro Sierra, Jose Luis Postigo and Niño de Pura in the Flamenco Institutes of “Amor de Dios” (Madrid) and the Cristina Heeren Foundation of Flamenco Arts (Seville). After performing for many years in prominent Flamenco Festivals and venues throughout Southern Spain, Álvaro Antona embarked on his International performance career in 2008. In 2010 he performed in London, England at important flamenco and jazz venues like “ Ronnie Scott´s.” A year later, in 2011 he was invited to perform and collaborate with the great musician and Sitar player, Anoushka Shankar on her tour “ Traveller, “ touring to Germany and Spain and working alongside Pepe Habicuela. Pedro Ricardo Miño, Sandra Carrasco and Ramón Porrina. In the same year, together with The Spanish Embassy, Álvaro mounted his personal fusion project, Flamenco Shaabi,” which reached International attention in many different cities of Egypt. Álvaro also began to tour extensively working with various International Flamenco dance companies in Europe, Africa and Canada. Since 2012, Álvaro has been primarily based in Turkey where he began studying traditional Turkish music in Istanbul. There he initiated a musical project and collective, “Kaknüs Ensemble,” a large and diverse music ensemble based on the roots of Ottoman and Sufí music. He also collaborates regularly with the Cervantes Institute in many aspect, including as a professor of Flamenco guitar. Today, Álvaro continues to reside in Istanbul, currently working with different musical projects as well as composing the music for the musical fusion project “La Cueva,” with the Fiona Malena Flamenco Ensemble, which premieres in Canada this September. https://youtube/watch?v=pM0OMXhrncM
