Alzheimers and My Sister.. amazing things happen. I cook for my sister when I can. I like being a social part of her life as long as I can. Last two times were winners. I like to make Oxtail Stew.. but I dont call it that or she would not eat it. I let the pot simmer all day and it was a wonderful stew. When I put it on the stove , she inspected it and looked around and got a spoon. ( I laughed). She likes fried chicken ... so I cooked some of that for her.Usually we have to coax her to the table. I turned my back to do something and she got a plate and put a piece on the plate and sat down to eat before everyone else. The real winner was dessert. I did not make it. I had cookies and Peeps. She opened the box of peeps and grinned. Then she proceeded to eat more. I like it that she is now eating and socializing.. not so ornery.. and she was smiling the whole time. My sister and I spent a lot of time together on weekends when she was herself. The previous meal was seafood and she enjoyed that as well. She is gaining weight. That is awesome because she can go to another medicine which is better for her and for us.We had a couple of normal conversations . I know she will not be ever the same, but I am extending the courtesy for her, being the food wagon as long as I can. Somehow it helps when we take breaks. My other sister lives closer and we mix it up. It is a long goodbye. It is sometimes heart wrenching. She worked so hard that work was all she talked about. Last night we talked about penny candy and the big jars it used to be in down south. And then she went to bed. Its not much but it is progress in some ways. Ten pounds.. yah. See the pomegranate ... I learned to open it out in Russia. She likes it and it is good for her. My sister was not a scholar at first. My mother taught her patience at learning to achieve. She eclipsed me with that skill and went to Law School. Part of her frustration now is that the person who cares for her ( paid) is not stimulating, just sits, and she cannot cook, but good help is very hard to find these days. Her caretaker is African and so cant discuss things that Barbar still wants to talk about.. but that may be the disease. My husband treats her like a princess and she responds so well. Who knew that he was a good sous chef. Here is something funny.I cook collard greens from time to time and he worries about them standing in water. I will have to tell him about pot liquids... Soft music seems to stimulate her. I am wondering what to do about a Christmas tree. She takes things and hides them in her bedroom. Not sure what to do with that. My other sister provides company, gives the medication and we work together to make Barbaras long slide in to Alzheimiers less jarring. I have learned not to use my teacher voice. LOL The use of technology, without much support, threw her into confusion which turned out to be the disease and its manifestations. She was an FTC lawyer with a secretary and that went away. The secretarial help. The constant changes in technology frustrated her. I am trying to personalize media for her. If you have suggestions please share. She likes classical music. I have no idea what movies she likes but we used to look at kinda love stories ( her choices). I dont take her for rides because then she wont get out of the car. Bonnie Bracey Sutton
