Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t just affect the elderly. Early-onset Alzheimer’s is an uncommon form of dementia that affects people younger than 65. Only about 5 percent of everyone who has Alzheimer’s develops it before age 65. There is a strong genetic path of inheritance for early-onset Alzheimer’s and testing is available. It is recommended that you consider genetic counseling beforehand to evaluate the pros and cons of getting tested for the specific gene mutation. If you have a parent or grandparent with Alzheimer’s and are experiencing memory problems, consider these steps: - Write down symptoms of memory loss or other cognitive difficulties to share with your physician. - Have a comprehensive medical evaluation with a doctor who specializes in Alzheimer’s disease. There is no one single test for Alzheimer’s. A diagnosis is only made after a comprehensive exam.
