Alzheimer’s the killer that leaves the victim alive but kills their memory! I remember in the early nineties when my stepfather/father passed away suddenly. I went home to his funeral. The day of the funeral I remember watching my family including my father’s mother setting their in the pew on the front row. Even though she was there she did not seem to be there! After the funeral we came back to the church for repass. About 30 minutes into repass I went over and spoke to her. She looked at me for a few seconds and I said Mama Roxy it’s me! She looked at me for a few more seconds and then said baby is that you? I said yes Mama Roxy it’s me. She said I saw you during the funeral but did not know who you was until now! I was my grandma Roxy oldest grandchild. I had been in her life longer than any of the others yet she knew not who I was. I did not know at the time Alzheimer’s was slowly stealing my grandmother’s memory of me and everyone else. The most interesting part of the realization that Alzheimer’s was leaving her body but taking her memory is to this day I’m not sure she actually understood that the funeral was for her only child! “For all the good times and bad times I’ve seen all through the years. The joy of family, friends and new beginnings as well as the sorrow and the deep pain of endings.
