Am I angry? No, I am a little sad though, and I was perplexed too, and its not difficult to perplex me. I was perplexed because I didnt understand why the response to my appeal was so small. Im not perplexed anymore, the answer is right there in the song you dont know what you have got till its gone Boy am I dumb, I have been looking at Durban with a tourists eyes, you grew up here. I grew up in Northern Natal and what was Rhodesia and though I have had the privilege of living here for the last six years I still see Durban as a tourist, I gawp, I say Kdaar Ma, check daai ou huis met die broekies lace. You for the most part say nothing, because you have passed it every day on your way to school. You may even have lived in that huis met broekies lace You have grown blasé. In the vicinity of the little zoning area we live in there are around 23 listed buildings, next door Morningside has more, Morningside is so thick with them some of them are going to rack and ruin. The same is true for Glenwood. But heres the rub the spaces between those listed buildings are still filled with buildings that are as old as the listed buildings and newer buildings that in a very few short years will also be old enough to enjoy a measure of protection from our heritage society. Now heres the thing, a lot of the houses that didnt make the list are almost as worthy of it, to my untrained eye, as those that did. As a consequence Durban has whole blocks of houses that would have made a list of protected buildings if only the one next door or down the road a bit werent a little more exceptional. So what the big deal? Its simple, Nobody goes to Rome to look at high rise apartments.
