Am I hearing this right? An Assistant Mayor of Bristol has claimed he is badly paid for what he does. Green councillor Gus Hoyt described his £31,796 annual allowance from the city council as “low” during a Twitter conversation with a friend, sparking criticism from some of his followers. When the pal invited Mr Hoyt to New York, he replied: “Can’t afford NYC I’m afraid mate.” He went on to post: “Am in a Big job but low pay... local government...” That response sparked criticism from several followers about what constitutes “low pay” in Bristol, including Councillor Christian Martin (Lib Dem, Clifton East). After Mr Hoyt claimed Mr Martin could not be trusted, Mr Martin asked: Your combined income is public record and is £32k - the question is how do you consider that low paid? Later yesterday, seemingly responding to the barbs coming his way, Mr Hoyt posted: “It’s quite interesting how some people are only driven by negativity and hatred. Must be horrible.” Mr Hoyt is part of George Fergusons cross-party cabinet and is responsible for neighbourhoods, environment and council housing.
