Am here in Hershey, Pennsylvania in what is a somewhat historic gathering with both the House and Senate Republicans in Washington gathered to make plans on the upcoming legislative year. A variety of interesting speakers have also addressed the group, as for instance Arthur Brooks, head of the American Enterprise Institute spoke at breakfast on the need to make the intellectual case for capitalism and the free market system, and Tony Blair, the former Prime Minister of England, spoke at lunch today on the continuing threat in the Middle East. At a more mundane level, I have finalized plans for a new Chief of Staff. This is a very important role and I wanted someone who had roots in South Carolina, yet knew well the legislative process and its players in Washington. After the special election of a year and one half ago, I kept a talented young man by the name of Jon Kohan on board, but then he had the chance to go and run the senate race in Iowa. Given the importance of that race, and the control of the U.S Senate, we wished him well and since then have been looking for a permanent replacement in this role. Scott English is that person. We have worked together over the course of twenty years. He has extensive experience in Washington, having started with me in a legislative role there when I was first in Congress. Equally important from my perspective is his care for, and knowledge of, South Carolina as he later came down and joined me in the Governor’s office. He rose through the ranks to eventually become my Chief of Staff in the Governor’s office as well. He is the former Chief Operating Officer at the Department of Education in Columbia under former State Superintendent Dr. Mick Zais and managed an agency that had approximately 900 employees. Most important of all we share views on the importance of constitutionally limited government, free markets, sustainable spending, the dangers of our present debt....and the design by the founding fathers for a government that enshrined freedom.
