Am i the only one whos not yet though of having a national Israel Day in Israel on a day thats not chosen for its relevance to the conflict? A comment on the thread below points out that for many countries, their national day is not about invasion and the indigenous peoples. I dont think its a perfectly relevant statement-- 4 July and the Declaration of Independence is in many ways parallel to Israels 5th Iyyar, and associating it with invasion raises the complications of the competing narratives. But on a practical level, the sensitive date could be put aside. For a few years now, ive been bothered by the insensitive triumphalism of the national holiday of Yom Haatzmaut and the juxtaposed anti-State sometimes-angry mourning of the Naqba. But these dates can be privatized, and Israel can come up with another date for an inclusive national Israel day.
