Am looking forward to reading Kleins new book. Interesting comments (last section of this article) about energy independence/democracy & the German governments bold policy and regulation that enables small-scale, decentralized energy. The same could apply to food independence and much more. You need those bold policies and you also need to say no to fossil fuels — you need regulation. So you need to have a relationship with government in order to win those policies. That doesn’t necessarily mean you need to be in government, by the way, because German Prime Minister Angela Merkel is no lefty, but the anti-nuclear movement and the climate movement in Germany is strong enough that they have won this, which is extraordinary. This is what modern social democracy could look like. Government creates the framework & the regulation that gives power to people in their homes & in their local communities. Its not big government - but is a different means to a social democratic ends. It also happens to be one of the key lessons from the Canterbury earthquakes (see Rebecca Solnits A Paradise Built in Hell, The Extraordinary Communities That Arise in Disaster).
