Am reading Amazon reviews of Harry Potter(TPS) aside from the expected gush of fan love some reviewers are funny, intellectually excusing their enjoyment of the book&its success by saying Rowling is no Shakespeare & pinning it down to her cleverness at spotting a budding public interest in the subject matter, apparently it was that which has lined her personal Gringotts with gold. Quite snobby really. Id love to puff out my chest and rubbish hyped up trash (Twilight&50Shades fans you are the subject of my mirthful sport, I make no apology) I was ready to when I first smugly picked up a Harry Potter book. Thing is I was suckered from the first page. People underestimate how hard it is to create characters people can believe in and bond themselves to, to draw a storyline across the thousands of pages with freshness and appeal. If it seems a simple read its because its well told, unlittered with pretentions. The beauty of it is the intelligent nods dotted here and there in false histories, place names etc. Interesting, after well over a decade, to reconsider Potter madness. I feel quite priveleged to have read these books when they were new, I seriously believe theyre classics thatll last like those of Barrie, Lewis Carroll, Tolkein and all those other imagination firing novels that are loved dearly by every new generation.
