Amaechi or Osibajo? By Bayo Adeyinka What has been Amaechis strengths may well be his Achilles heel as the VP Candidate to GMB is being considered somewhere in VI right now. Amaechi is loud, very contentious, a rabble rouser and spoils for a fight easily. He is thought to be able to draw votes from the South South and the rabbit he pulled out of the hat in the rally in PH looms large in the memory of the APC leaders. But can Buhari afford to have such a VP? Can Amaechi be trusted? Wont he be too ambitious? God forbid but what if GMB transits to his creator (considering his age) a la Yaradua during the tenure of office, provided he wins the Presidential elections? Wont there be a repeat of the Goodlucks Doctrine of Necessity? Can Amaechi be controlled? Will he be loyal or fiercely independent-minded? He can easily build a structure for himself. Wont he do an Atiku to Buhari? These are the questions to be debated tonight in my opinion. Prof Yemi Osibajo may emerge as the dark horse. APC cannot joke with the Yoruba votes and the name of Osibajo on the ballot may lure those who are undecided. Moreover, hes a pastor and will balance the Muslim fundamentalist perception of GMB- just like the Pastor Tunde Bakare balancing act. Recall also that Osibajo wrote a very powerful article in defense of Rauf Aregbesola during the last Osun Election (read it here bayoadeyinka/bayoadeyinka/index.php/bloghome/entry/must-read-response-to-mr-eyieyie-on-aregbesola-by-prof-yemi-osinbajo). Coming from the Redeemed Christian Church, they may be banking on the huge numbers to be pulled from that denomination. He is also very sound and may give an intellectual bent to the duo. His loyalty to Asiwaju is not in doubt- since the inception of democracy. I think thats his greatest strength. Personally I would have looked forward to someone like Kayode Fayemi but I understand he may not be in the reckoning. Babatunde Fashola wont make the cut too because they cant afford to put out a Muslim/Muslim ticket. Adams Oshiomole is too unpredictable to be trusted with power. He can easily build a structure for himself. So I would wager for an Osibajo. The risks over Amaechi seems to be too much. But then Im not one of the decision makers. So who do you think will be the chosen one?
