Amarillo has got to get itself into business and growth mode and if you read this article you can also see that Chamber of Commerce is more involved with business and the economy in Lubbock. The newspaper in Lubbock has a business page but where is the business news for Amarillo? Give us some new business to talk about. Quotes from the article: Bringing more than 250 new jobs to the Lubbock market, the opening of Costco on Friday, Nov. 15, is just another sign of a strong local economy, experts said. “Having Costco here is a reflection of the growth of our community because I don’t think a national store would be interested in coming to Lubbock without them doing the market analysis,” said Eddie McBride, president of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce. Lubbock reached the 200,000 mark in terms of population in the mid-2000s, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and the city’s continued expansion combined with Costco’s overall success in Texas were major factors in bringing the wholesaler to the South Plains. “We know there are communities like this that can support a Costco, and we are just continuing to look at those places and build out Costcos where we can,” said Scott Huntington, manager of the store. Costco is a membership-only wholesale retailer with products ranging from toilet paper in bulk to factory-priced electronics. “Our goal is to offer the best quality merchandise at the lowest possible price,” Huntington said. “We strive for what we call a balance of value.” In addition to bringing low-cost bulk products to the city, Costco leaders have expressed plans to become a strong member of the Chamber of Commerce, McBride said. “They are a member of the chamber, and they have interest both in getting their employees involved as well as playing a leadership role in the business community,” he said.
