Amateur Photographer, issue of the week ending 6 July 1996, there was the first review of the Contax AX (an autofocus camera using manual focus lenses, yes it is.) So in 1996 the Japanese producer of Contax cameras made the one, and the only I know, AF system which works in a “different way”. Every producer around the world, at that time, has applied every type of motorized system on the lens barrel, not the Kyocera-Contax engineers. They designed the AX system thinking that the camera were able to use standard Zeiss manual focus lens on it, via a moving focal plane: astonishing! After 18 years, I still think that they were the only guys capable to put the typical Carl Zeiss/Contax approach to solve a problem: don’t take, never, the simple way to do it, use your fantasy. Ok, that’s my point of view, so, now it’s time for some consideration/datas: The AX is a solid, heavy and big camera. It weighs 1080 grams, without the battery (!); it is deep (72 mm from front to back) in order to accommodate the moving focal plane within the camera that must move back and forth to accomplish autofocusing. As expected about every Contax Camera, It is well constructed with high quality materials. The finish is smooth and the controls have a very solid feel. To achieve this Contax made an aluminum alloy chassis which is quite rigid and the top cover is titanium. As I can imagine, the autofocus system is the center of the attention because of its unique approach to focusing in 35 mm photography. Adjusting the distance between the lens and the film plane by moving the film plane is something becoming from the past, usual on the old large format cameras, but the AX is the first application of this method to the 35mm format. The principle is simple, in order to focus on a subject, one can either use the lens to focus or one can move the film plan. In the AX the body does most of the focusing work, not the lenses. I won’t say anything more than: the capabilities of this camera are similar to most modern SLRs, but the advantage is the design philosophy of its creators. Like all Contax cameras, the AX is solid and straightforward. What it does is similar to its contemporary competition from other companies. How it does it is pure Contax philosophy.
