Amazing day yesterday. We have a lady and her two daughters, and granddaughter visiting with us right now. Joan lived and worked at Port Wakefield, the old cannery site about 5 miles South of us, in 1965; the year after the 1964 earthquake and tidal wave that was so devastating to this area, Kodiak, and Alaska. The quake had shut the cannery down, but a factory processing ship was moored to the dock, still processing the abundance of King Crab still in this area. Joan spent the winter at Wakefields working with her husband and daughter, who was 5, and was pregnant with her youngest. She returned home to the midwest to have her baby, and in the waiting room ready to deliver, received notification that the boat her husband was working on had sunk and he was missing. His body was never found, and Joan never returned, until this trip. Yesterday Joan and her family rode with me on the Gemini around Raspberry, to the spot they found the boat her husband was on, and on, to Port Lions, where the Port Wakefields processing equipment and many of the buildings had been relocated to. (Port Lions was a new village at the time, as the residents of Afognak Village were relocated to that area due to extreme damage by the 64 quake). Then we came back up through Raspberry Straits and spent some time in front of the old cannery ruins at Pt. Wakefields, looking at old pictures, visualizing where their cabin used to be, and reflecting on all that has changed in 49 years. Unbelievable trip for me, and outstanding people to spend the day with. Even caught a few fish on the way home :) Also had 2 bear views yesterday to find the abundance of bear in last weeks hot spot had moved, so moved to a new location to land and have some great viewing up close and personal! Then a hike up the mountain afterwards. SW winds today and back after the fish--wish us luck...
