Amazing response to this post on Stuff Christian Culture Likes. Think about it this way: There once was a young pastor who had a very close relationship with Jesus. He got the best possible three-year seminary education and then got his own church right afterwards. Right away, his preaching was so popular that it drew in hundreds of people who werent Christians. No one had heard sermons like that before -- at least, not in that town and not for a long time. Many of them converted: people that never would have worshiped Jesus if it werent for his innovative preaching. His church had some growing pains, but the Holy Spirit was definitely helping it along. Problem was, this pastor had a tendency to sometimes speak without thinking through how his words would affect others. He started seeking popularity with the right sort of people, and could also be something of a hothead with people he disagreed with. After a while, he started requiring more and more of his church members, so much so that a lot of the new converts were turning away from Christ. People got hurt and wounded. It got so bad that even though he and his church had done a lot of great things for God, he needed to be publicly rebuked and corrected, and the people he hurt needed a safe place where they knew they would be loved as Gods children and where they could heal. After all, shoving more religious requirements down their throats would be counterproductive. Would you say that publicly exposing this pastors sin and wrong teaching was a good thing or a bad thing? Would doing that cause more division in the church? Was opposing him be taking the side of Satan? Well, an itinerant evangelist from out of town did stand up and go toe to toe with him. The amazing thing is that the pastor recognized his error, repented, and wound up being incredibly instrumental in spreading the gospel. The name of the pastor was Peter, and the evangelist was Paul. You might have heard of them. The difference between Peter and Mark Driscoll is that Peter repented. So far, Driscoll has only doubled down.
