Amazing, the organization of our RESPIRATORY & CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS: Ventilation, oxygenation, & circulation all work together to keep you and yours alive. Ventilation/ inhalation occurs when our cerebral fluid increases in PH due to carbon dioxide buildup. This innervates sensors, causing our intercostal muscles to contract raising the thoracic cavity. This decreases internal pressure (inside thoracic cavity) allowing for atmospheric pressure to fill our lungs with oxygen. Oxygen passes upper, and lower respiratory systems and ultimately reaches the Alveoli (functional unit in lungs). Here the first phase of oxygenation takes place and is called External respiration. Threw diffusion, oxygen is interchanged with carbon dioxide, CO2 being released in Exhalation and O2 moving on to perfusion. Hemoglobin attracts O2 in the Alveoli and carries it back the heart threw the pulmonary veins as oxygen rich blood. Perfusion or pumping/delivery of O2 rich blood to organ tissue takes place; once it arrives to its destination the second phase of oxygenation takes place. Internal respiration is diffusion of O2 to cells in exchange for cellular waste (CO2). Once this is done, the CO2 rich blood makes its a final trip back to your heart moving blood back into the lungs where the cycle is repeated.
