Amazing turtle video. The turtles of the world are doing their best to help. Please help protect our wildlife by taking a minute to send an email. Thank you and Happy New Year! Call to Action: Please write in your own words or send the sample letter below to Council Members at: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Attention: City of Cambridge Mayor and Councillors; Regional Chair and Councillors;Township of North Dumfries Mayor and Councillors As a citizen of Ontario, I am naturally concerned with development projects that affect the ecological integrity of my province. As such, I am writing to urge you to reconsider the approval of the proposed developments in West Galt including the Cambridge West and Highland Ridge West subdivisions. Watersheds like Barrie’s Lake are very unique and naturally provide the people of Ontario with a wide variety of benefits, such as flood prevention, carbon sequestration, improving water quality and providing a habitat for unique plant and animal communities. Barrie’s Lake is home to several species at risk, including the Jefferson salamander. Wetlands like Barrie’s Lake takes thousands of years to form and relies on clean water supplied from a natural hydrogeological/hydrological cycle in order to maintain its ecological integrity. These very unique factors have resulted in the area having multiple protective designations, at multiple levels of government. The Grand River Conservation Authority has identified the area as susceptible to contamination and the Cambridge West MESP Natural Environment Study stated that the groundwater was typically found less than 5 m below the ground surface, though it also states that there are areas where the groundwater is found less than 2 m below the ground surface. The MESP also states that Barrie’s Lake is a groundwater recharge area that contributes to different creeks, including Gilholm Marsh, Bechtel Creek, Cedar Creek, Devil’s Creek and Cruickston Creek, as well as the Grand River. Contamination of Barrie’s Lake would result in the contamination of multiple different creeks. Indeed, the greatest threats to ecosystems like Barrie’s Lake are a lack of natural water flow and the maintenance of clean water. Allowing development in this part of Cambridge would be disastrous for the entire area. Stormwater runoff could contaminate Barrie’s Lake and spread throughout the watershed. Stormwater contamination could cause irreparable damage to the ecological integrity of multiple watersheds. This could be disastrous for many of the migrating birds and butterflies that pass through Barrie’s Lake, many of which have species at risk status under the federal Species at Risk Act and the provincial Endangered Species Act. Enhanced traffic would result in higher mortality for the local wildlife. Residents of Ontario assume that the government will protect the places we love and we love our wetlands. We also want to believe that we, the public, will be respectfully welcomed to participate in the decision-making process. Instead, concerned citizens believe they have been ignored or shut out under the false premise that they were not interacting with the system properly. It is apparent that vital information and notice has been withheld from concerned citizens. As a concerned citizen I am asking you to reconsider approval for development plans slated for Highland Ridge West and Cambridge West. Please, take our concerns to heart and protect our irreplaceable resources. Sincerely,
