Amazing whats happening in Spain! A new political party, Podemos, based on citizen participation and direct action, has risen in a mere 100 days to become one of the leading parties in Spain, winning five seats and 1.2 million votes in Spains European elections. The party has no central organizational structure, based on local working groups. Those who have won the election have reduced their pay to 3X the minimum wage and refuse to fly business class or mix with lobbyists. One interesting facet of Podemos is that it is adapting new tools to implement participatory democracy on a local level, particularly Loomio, which is designed for groups of up to 500 to make decisions together. Could Podemos provide a blueprint for a new political movement in the US? Could people begin to organize and raise consciousness on the local level to make the necessary changes that our political economic system will not allow?
