Ambassador Dirir explains regarding recent press reports about possible third party mediations between Ethiopia and Egypt, In a statement to journalists, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Egypt Mohamoud Dirir said, “It is naïve to consider that relations between Ethiopia and Egypt should solely be viewed through the prism of the Nile issue.” Ambassador Dirir underlined Ethiopia’s conviction that the deep historic relations between the two nations call for a vision, which goes beyond such a narrow scope; and encompasses integrated economic and social aspects of development. He appreciated the spirit, which prevailed among the Ethiopian senior water experts, who attended the training course in Cairo; and their Egyptian colleagues as well as the trainers. Speaking about the tripartite deliberations, between Ethiopia, the Sudan and Egypt on the Renaissance Dam, Ambassador Dirir said, “Constructive dialogue is the only alternative in order to maximize the benefits, which our peoples and the Region shall reap from the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam. Regarding recent press reports about possible third party mediations between Ethiopia and Egypt, Ambassador Dirir said, “As far as I know, there are only two― and only two― countries in the entire world which are well-placed to mediate between Egypt and Ethiopia; and these are, of course; Ethiopia and Egypt, themselves. That is if there is a need at all for a mediator.” He added that the role of the Sudan, as a partner, is pivotal in ironing out any seemingly difficult impasse regarding the on-going dialogue between his country and Egypt. Ambassador Dirir concluded his statement that these nations have ample wisdom and experience in retaining the Nile as a source of cooperation for the whole Basin Countries; and not a curse of conflicts. The ceremony in which the Ethiopian Ambassador to Egypt made this statement was held at the Nile Water Sector in Cairo under the auspices of the Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Mohamed Abdul-Mutallib.▄
