The information is reported by Fraternite Matin (pp. 4-5) which notes that the meeting is part of a joint summit of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the West African Economic and Monetary Union known by its French acronym UEMOA. On the occasion, the paper says, the group of leaders recommitted to working to strengthen regional integration and taking the necessary steps to combat poverty in the region. In his opening address, Senegalese president Macky Sall called on peers to join efforts to achieve development and address regional challenges. Citing peace and security as priorities, the paper notes that UEMOA official Cheikh Hadjibou underscored that development in the region is contingent upon a peaceful political and social environment. “Achieving growth is not possible without peace and security,” he reportedly said. The trial of supporters of former president Laurent Gbagbo to open soon amidst speculation and critics by human rights groups According to a report in Nord Sud Quotidien (p. 2), the trial of supporters of former president Laurent Gbagbo, including his wife Simone Gbagbo, will start soon. The daily alleges that arrangements are being made to start over the proceedings. Citing people close to the case, the paper notes that a final verdict is expected this year. “There is no date yet but people want the case to be finalized by the end of the year” one of the defense lawyer Herve Gouamene said. This update came as L’Inter (p. 4) notes that Western diplomats in Cote d’Ivoire have voiced concerns about the Ivoirian justice system. According to the daily, their concerns were recently echoed by human rights groups who have accused the Ivoirian government of being engaged in a double standard of justice. Notre Voie (p. 4) carries a similar account adding that, according to a recent report by French newspaper Le Monde, Cote d’Ivoire has made no substantial move ahead in its fight against impunity, calling on the Ivoirian government to take greater measures to address the problem. Abidjan port reinforces security measures to face potential piracy acts Authorities from the Abidjan port said yesterday that security measures have been increased to combat potential piracy acts on the port. The information is reported by Fraternite Matin (p. 19). According to the daily, a mock attack by pirates was carried out to assess the efficiency of these measures and ensure they meet international standards including the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code. Entrepreneurship: Cote d’Ivoire chapter of the African Women’s Entrepreneurship to explore opportunities for women According to a report in Le Quotidien d’Abidjan (p. 2), members of AWEP - the African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program of Cote d’Ivoire - opened a training yesterday in Abidjan on business opportunities. Intended to improve the skills of female entrepreneurs, the session is sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Abidjan, the paper says. PDCI mourns death of party’s women wing president PDCI supporters paid tribute yesterday to Henriette Dao Coulibaly, the former president of the PDCI women’s wing who died last week. The information is reported by Le Nouveau Reveil (pp. 2-6).
