American Idol - Week 10 - Viewer Selected Songs Breaking news: Ryan Seacrest got a dog named Georgia. :-) Alex - (10) - Impressive. His best performance yet. He doesn’t have The Look but music is an audio experience and that was simply excellent. That could definitely work as a record. His musicality has never been in question but his folk driven lane can be boring. (Still at risk) Caleb - (9) - Nice. Predictable, but nice. Caleb is the odds on favorite to win this. His only problem is that he is Caleb. He sings Rock. Just Rock. When he had to sing a Country sing, he Rocked it. When he had to sing a soul song, “Chain Of Fools”, he Rocked that too. That is his lane and that is all he can do which would be great if a lot of Rock fans watched American Idol - but they do not. Demographically that puts Caleb at bit of a disadvantage. Probably still a lock for the finals, but.... (Might be at some risk) Sam, Alex, Jena - That was really great. Again, that could work as a single. Jessica - (9) - That was excellent. A little pitchy in the beginning but she got it under control quickly. She really has been listening to her mentors. And she looked gorgeous. But Jessica had a meltdown during Group week. She came off badly - as sort of a high minded bully. This happened to great singer Kimberly Caldwell on season 2 and she was unable to overcome the high negatives that meltdown produced. And she looked great too. It’s so hard to overcome high negatives. But Hillary Clinton had some of the highest negatives ever and now she’s the odds on favorite to become the next President of the United States so it can be done. All Jessica can do is put the petal to the metal, concentrate and hope those negatives melt away. She’s got everything else. (At risk) Sam - (10) - The Arianna Grade moment was killer cute. Sam is so shy. I loved that. He is just really, really good and that time he absolutely locked into the groove. A couple of hit singles and this kid could easily become the next teen sensation. Note to Justin Beiber. Get a hit. That bad boy thing aint for everybody and sometimes things in your rear view mirror are closer than you think. Ricky Nelson was a shy kid too and in 1958, Elvis Presleys jackpot year, Ricky Nelson out sold him. I’ll say it again, come on kid, you can win this! (Safe) Jena - (10) - Damn girl. Killer. Great song choice. She just destroyed that. But she still has no lane, no readily identifiable sound to her voice and she’s not particularly pretty. But she’s cute, has a gigantic smile and she comes off as a very nice 17 year old kid that’s easy to root for. Could we be looking at a Sam / Jena final? They each could be teen Pop Idols. (Safe) Caleb & Jessica - One of my favorite performances of the season. Perfect duet on the Stones classic. Boy do their voices ever go together - sort a Rock version of Steve & Eydie for those of you old enough to understand that reference. Those two should get married. And call Weight Watchers. :-) I’ll be playing that track Friday! Alex - (10) - Musically beautiful. Not my groove but pretty darn close to perfect. (But still at risk) Jena (11) - OK, I’m becoming a believer. I couldn’t disagree more with the judges on that. That was absolutely sensational! Detroit music impresario Gerry Zonca has been telling me this all along. She was even able to change the sound of her voice to lean into Winehouse vocally. Maybe she should stay there. Could that be her missing lane - Winehouse? (Safe) Sam - (9) - First time I’ve heard pitch problems from Sam. Pitch-wise, that was a little rough. But once he hit his groove it was really terrific. Probably not going to help or hurt him much either way. (Hopefully safe) Jessica - (10) - Great song choice! She looked beautiful in that red dress with the tattooed leg. I loved it! But did she do enough to overcome her high negatives and save herself in the voting? She did for me, but with the voters, she could be in trouble. (Still at risk) Caleb (10) - What can I say? Guitar Rock is so not my groove - but he crushed it as he always does. Are there enough guitar driven Rock demographics out there among the voting public? We’ll see. (At risk?) My Bottom 2 - Caleb & Alex Voters Bottom 2 - Alex & Jessica I’d send home: Alex Voters may send home: Jessica (But I hope not)
