American Idol has come a long way since it’s not-so-humble beginnings in 2002. After a small ratings dip, the singing competition is in full swing again and drawing viewers with a new cast of charming judges and even an openly out-of-the-closet contestant. But what happened to the Idol judges of yore? Simon Cowell, at least, has moved on to similarly themed reality competitions and is looking to resurrect some old friends for his own show, X-Factor. Among the possible ghosts-of-karaoke-past getting a second chance could be Mariah Carey and Paula Abdul. That’s right, Simon Cowell is looking to add the two divas as judges to the next season according to The Rolling Stone. Other potential judges being considered for the roles are George Michael, Jessica Simpson, and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls. Although similar to Idol, X-Factor ”will have higher stakes – the winner will get a $5 million record contract, the largest prize in the history of American television – and more thorough mentoring for its contestants from big-name stars.” The newest season of the show is set to debut on Fox in the Fall.
