American Legion Auxiliary Gift Shop - Another Year of Holiday Cheer Each year after Thanksgiving, the ladies of the Arizona Department of the American Legion Auxiliary host their Gift Shop for Veterans at the Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS). The 2014 Gift Shop was held the first week of December at the NAVAHCS Theatre, building 15. It was the 40th year for the event in Prescott and the 69th year nationwide. Over 30 volunteers, some from as far away as Colorado, helped 227 local Veterans select gift items for themselves and for about 550 immediate family members. The gifts, all available at no cost, included clothing items and accessories, homemade quilts and blankets, children’s toys and other donated items. The ladies wrapped and shipped the Veterans’ presents for free. American Legion Auxiliary volunteers shop year-around and accept donations to stock up on items for this one event. On average, the value of gifts per Veteran ranges from $25 - $50. The Auxiliary also focuses women Veterans by taking them on shopping trips when insufficient female items are donated. “The American Legion Auxiliary’s Arizona Department is like a big family,” says Sally Fine, a volunteer. “It’s a privilege for all of us to serve our military Veterans. We help strengthen Veterans’ self-esteem and self-respect by enabling them to give gifts to their loved ones during the holiday season.” Anyone interested in donating money or gift items to the Arizona Department of the American Legion Auxiliary may contact Carmen Goswick at PO Box 74, Humboldt AZ 86329. Please write “gift shop” on your donation check. Help the American Legion Auxiliary continue this holiday tradition!
