American Press, 12/28/2014, page E7 Get out of the house for the Home Show RITA LEBLEU, rlebleu@americanpress Home improvement enthusiasts and people who plan to build new this year can pick up plenty of ideas at this year’s 24th Annual Home Show. “We’ve added 23 more booths and changed the name to the Home, Garden, and Lifestyle Show to better communicate the range of products and services that will be featured,” said Liz Trahan, executive officer for the Home Builders Association of Southwest Louisiana (SWLA). The show, held at the Lake Charles Civic Center, is scheduled for 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 and 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18, 2015. Admission is $6 for ages 12 and over. This year’s show sponsor is Centerpoint Energy. “We selected the new name because we want everyone to know that this isn’t just a venue for only lumber, plumbing or electrical products,” said Trahan. Last year’s booths included those types of products plus smart, stylish and cost-effective ways to design or renovate your home – including ideas on the latest in cabinetry and countertops, flooring and lighting, bathroom fixtures and kitchen appliances, home audio and security, home mortgage and home owner insurance info, exterior products and stained glass and sculptures. “This year, we have furniture. That’s new,” Trahan said. “The booth tally is at 174 and represents more than 90 companies at this point,” Trahan said. “I think we have about 15 booths left.” Adding to the fun of seeing what the latest home products are is the chance to win door prizes offered by the companies in the show. The grand prize, a Yeti Cooler, will be provided by Stine. The show uses the entire exhibition hall and coliseum. New this year is a stage for 20-minute vendor presentations. “This is where companies can share more detailed information about their products or how to use them, for instance, how to use chalk paint,” Trahan explained. Last year the Home Show drew 2,300 attendees, even with the ice storm, according to Trahan. “For many people, this is a family event.” Other attendees are serious shoppers making notes and collecting business cards for a particular product or to use in the home they’re planning to build soon. “I can’t think of any other way to get these kinds of answers, advice, insight and ideas you need to make your dream home a reality during one visit and all under one roof,” says Trahan. The Home Builders Association of SWLA is a nonprofit, professional organization that represents and serves builders in Southwest Louisiana involved in residential new construction, residential remodeling, commercial construction and land development activities; and associated member businesses and professionals engaged in activities related to the building industry.
