Conservative politicians have made it a flag waiving pro-war movie. The film is more the reluctant warrior and ethics of war picture. Its R rating and violence, with Clint Eastwood as director, it as morally problematic as any R film that has a conflict over war, killing, guns or faith. Clint Eastwood is a Republican conservative. But the film may or may not be a conservative film. Depends on your bias going in. Many critics have called it the best or one of the best films Eastwood has ever made. And it is up for Academy Awards. And it has made more money than any R rated film in its opening weekend in history.
