American composer Andrew Imbrie (1921-2007) was a student of Nadia Boulanger and Roger Sessions with a strong interest in Bartoks musical language. His own musical language was considerably atonal, though he did not adhere to serial techniques that were in vogue after WWII. This first string quartet was his senior thesis project at Princeton. He wrote a total of five during his career, all of which were recorded on LP or CD but are mostly (maybe all...) out-of-print.
