American independence,the fruit of the struggle that had started in 1760,set a new task-the job of writing a Constitution and giving form to the ideas of self-government that had gradually developed.Even when the war of the American Revolution was being fought,Americas leaders knew that their ideas of liberty had come from England,*the temporary enemy.The entire shape of the new government of the United States-from the county,which was a British unit,to the various parts of the federal government itself-was to show the influence of British forms.
